A large city with a small-town vibe, San Diego often feels like one big resort. You might wonder if people actually get any work done, with the miles of golden beaches and fantastic year-round weather. Here are a few boutique hotels to make your San Diego holiday a perfect long weekend family destination.

Right by the bay

Mission Beach is one of the most vibrant parts of San Diego. Well located to explore this part of town is The Dana on Mission Bay. You’re minutes away from the boardwalk at Mission Beach, and Seaworld San Diego is just around the corner. This large hotel has plenty of green spaces for you to explore, plus a large swimming pool that overlooks the marina.

South Pacific charm

Located on the other side of Mission Bay, I stayed at the Catamaran Resort and Spa on a family vacation to San Diego, which I’ll never forget. This high-end family-friendly hotel is right on the beach and has a Hawaiian feel to it. You’ll love hearing the birds singing as you’re roaming the gardens, relaxing poolside, or enjoying a comfortable sleep in your huge room. As for the location, you’re on the quieter end of Mission Beach, with laid-back Pacific Beach walking distance away. Don’t miss out on the huge breakfast burritos at Kono’s Cafe.

Right by the action

While not as trendy as the other options, the Red Roof Inn San Diego Downtown is a solid choice for unfussy travelers who just want to be close to the action. You’re close to San Diego’s “big ticket items,” with Balboa Park a short drive away, the Westfield Horton Plaza shopping center within walking distance, along with the historic Gaslamp District, which buzzes with excellent nightlife throughout the week. While rooms are quite simple and nothing out of the ordinary, it’s the location that makes this hotel a solid choice.

Close to the fish

A good choice for traveling families, the Comfort Inn & Suites is a short driving distance from all major attractions. Children will love having their very own room, parents will enjoy having their own privacy, and the entire family will enjoy the huge breakfast buffet. San Diego’s charming Old Town is just minutes away, while Seaworld and the world-famous San Diego Zoo are just minutes away by car.

Away from it all

Set in an exclusive spot in the heart of Mission Bay, the Hilton San Diego Resort & Spa is a top choice for those seeking a slice of luxury. The huge property has Mediterranean-inspired architecture and feels kind of away from it all, despite being just minutes away from downtown. Head on a tour of Mission Bay by kayak, jet ski, or paddle board, or maybe grab a Segway to explore the Mission Beach boardwalk. There are plenty of ways to keep the family busy, and we haven’t even discussed the major attractions nearby.

So the next time you’re heading to Southern California, check out these and other hotels in San Diego. It’s the perfect destination for a long family weekend in the sun.
