5 Days In Tahiti Itinerary
Day 5: Papenoo Valley
Do not miss the opportunity to explore Tahiti’s interior on a guided 4X4 tour of the Papenoo Valley. Be sure to book this excursion in advance. My recommendation is to book with Olivier Lenoir from Ia Orana Tahiti Expeditions. Olivier is not only a dear friend of mine, but he’s also a living legend in Tahiti; a well-known dancer, choreographer, and former Mr. Tahiti champion. Olivier is an expert on Tahitian culture.
The Papenoo Valley follows the contours of the largest river in Tahiti, deep into the uninhabited center of the island. The only way to explore this wild part of the island is with a 4X4. The track takes you along the river, across streams over the mountains, and up to breathtaking panoramic vistas. The full-day option includes a visit to the dreamy Lake Vahiria.
Depending on the type of Papenoo Valley tour you joined, you might have the chance to do some small-scale hiking to waterfalls, like the unforgettable Maroto Waterfall. The best part? There’s absolutely nobody else here!
If you opted for the full-day tour of the Papenoo Valley, it’s now time to exit to the west coast of the island, and you’ll start the return leg by going through a tunnel that runs right beneath the highest section of the area. Afterward, you’ll begin the plunge to Lake Vahiria (473m) and continue through a section of an extremely lush rainforest before reaching the highway on the west coast.
Logistics: book in advance and bring at least 2L of water, swimming gear, sandals, and mosquito repellent. Some variations of the tour might include an optional traditional picnic lunch for an extra charge.
Dinner and Dance Show
When you arrive in Tahiti, ask your hosts when there will be a dinner and dance show taking place at one of the resorts, and don’t miss the opportunity to see Tahitian dancing at its best. The top performances include dance groups that won the annual July Heiva festival so we are talking about the seriously talented and exotic dancers!
